The Appleton Post-Crescent Views: Appleton, Wisconsin

Commentary: Medicare takes center stage
Dont look now, but the 2012 election is turning into a national referendum on what to do about Medicare.
Editorial: Kathleen Falk bows to pressure with union pledge
Special-interest groups sometimes try to make a splash during a campaign by asking candidates to sign their pledge.
Jeff Spoehr column: Windfall can be matter of perspective
Several years ago, I read an article by someone who put Barry Bonds new contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates into some perspective for the common man.
Letters: Government Accountability Board isnt upholding recall integrity
It appears to me the Government Accountability Board is nothing more than a sham group put together to give the appearance of judging the fairness of the recall process. Moreover, the board looks like its working hard to vet the process, but in fact is afraid to do anything that would be unfavorable to the radical and highly militant recall backers.
Letters: Dont fall prey to ObamaCare foes
Kudos to Community Columnist Michael Muoio for his thoughtful compilation of health care information (Feb. 8, Do we really have a choice in health care). It draws on the Organization of Economic Development and Cooperation Report on Healthcare and is an accurate description of the worldwide status of health care.
Its Your Call
LOVING GESTURE: We just experienced another Valentines Day, a reminder to the world to choose love toward each other. God said it first in Corinthians: Let love be your greatest aim. Even people who dont believe in him need, want and require love. So please be sweet to everyone you meet.
Analysis: Payroll tax cut extension happens without fuss
A united House Republican leadership surrendered crisply and cleanly on legislation to extend expiring payroll tax cuts for 160 million Americans.
Editorial: Mortgage money shouldnt go to state budget
There are already several weaknesses to the $26 billion settlement that several mega-banks made with state and federal governments over the mortgage crisis.
Bob Kowalczyk column: GAB isnt accountable in recall process
I was really taken aback as I read the Thumbs Up to the Government Accountability Board in the Feb. 11 Post-Crescent about the boards decision to reject calls for outside help in checking recall petitions. The Post-Crescent feels that the board is absolutely about upholding the integrity of the process under the law. I disagree very strongly, and so do many others.
Its Your Call
RECALL FEVER: Its obvious now that anyone planning on running for state office should consult with the unions first to find out how they should vote should they get elected. If they dont vote the way the unions want them to vote, they will simply get recalled, and the unions can afford to do it. They have an endless supply of money its called the taxpayer.
Letters: Old voting phrases not always true
There are some disturbing phrases used when the subject of voting comes up. I have heard them all too often, to the point of being offended by the following examples.
Letters: Vanity Fair writers both stuttered
How interesting was Laurie Friedman Fannins Jan. 31 column, (Christopher) Hitchens death is a loss to all, about the prolific author and regular correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine.
Letters: Exhibition center well on its way
A year ago in a letter to the editor, I suggested we look back at 2010. My focus at the time centered on the budding Fox Cities Exhibition Center coalitions efforts to turn talk of an exhibition center in Appleton into a reality.
Letters: Ice rescues costly for taxpayers
I suppose it may be too much to ask, but are these people who continue to get stuck on the lakes and rivers or fall through the ice time and time again being charged the fully allocated cost of their rescue

CAREER OPTIONS: Manufacturing is vital to Wisconsins economy.

With the budget cuts Wisconsin has seen recently, its tempting for school districts to seek out additional revenue sources.
George Will column: Memorial plans fail to reflect real Eisenhower
Two coming developments, one dismal and one excellent, pertain to Americas memory of a great man.

Its Your Call
CHOW DOWN: I had just finished my second or third bowl of Froot Loops when I came across a USA Today report that linked overeating to a risk of memory loss. The studys lead author from the Mayo Clinic wait hold the mayo, I think it was Sloan-Kettering or maybe Johns Hopkins. Anyway, the more calories consumed correlated highly to cognitive impairment. Seventy to 90 people who were at least 1,233 years old no, it was 1,233 people aged 70 to 90 took part in the study, which statistically suggested a link between forgetfulness and calorie intake. Other independent researchers in either Austria or Australia came to the same conclusion. Fascinating. Are you going to finish those fries
Editorial: Plenty of blame in budget mess
In case you need another sign of how screwed up Washington is, here you go:
Sarah Ferge column: Parents can learn from kids sports, too
The road to embarrassment is paved with good intentions.
Mike Nichols column: Responsibility doesnt include royal we
Unless youre a king or a demigod or, as Mark Twain once wrote, somebody with a tapeworm, its usually a good idea to avoid referring to yourself with the pronoun we.
Column: Sex, lies and the pregnancy that never was
Gaby Rodriguez was a 17-year-old high school honor student in Yakima, Wash., when she hit upon an imaginative senior project on teen pregnancy. She would declare she was pregnant. In the months that followed, as she bulked up with a home-made prosthesis, she would log the reaction of friends, family and classmates to her condition.
Its Your Call
IN THE PAST: In his Feb. 10 call, Jim DeShaney bravely stepped out of the box, and I applaud him for it. In todays political climate, its either recall Gov. Scott Walker or bash President George W. Bush. Mr. DeShaney went back beyond Walker. Even though he only went back three governors, he at least spoke up to the Walker recallers. Now the Bush-bashers should look back to President Lyndon B. Johnson, and perhaps we could all move on. Thanks, Jim, for getting people thinking.
Letters: Lawmakers should be more responsible
Many people are saying both political parties should come together by compromising to solve all problems, but compromising is whats led to the deplorable condition that our country finds itself in.
Letters: Battered womens info shouldnt be open
According to a Post-Crescent opinion and Kevin Kennedy, the director of the Government Accountability Board, the concerns of formerly battered wives with respect to any publication of their addresses on recall petitions posted online are outweighed by, as The P-C said, a presumption of openness under the law which outweighs that concern.
Letters: Hiring new staff can be expensive
I would like to comment on Bill Otts Feb. 4 commentary (Employers can give nation a gift) on how to reduce unemployment in Wisconsin.
Letters: Businesses gun bans dont stop criminals
In the wake of the first shooting of a criminal involving a legal concealed carry permit holder, Nazir Al-Mujaahid, on Jan. 30 at an Aldi store in Milwaukee, we see that trained citizens of this state are fully capable of defending themselves, and others, under our new laws.
